Portal, The Connected Screen Of Facebook

Portal, the connected screen of Facebook

Facebook-Portal

          Product Overview

On the touch screen of one of the Portal devices or by calling the "Hey Portal" voice wizard, you can initiate a video call with your Facebook contacts.

Video calls via the Portal are available exclusively to users of the text and video chat service of Facebook Messenger.

Your contacts don't need their own Portal to receive a call, but they must at least use the Facebook Messenger application or the Messenger web interface.

On both Portal devices, the camera has a 140-degree field of view, giving you a much wider view of the caller's environment.

The camera can automatically pan and zoom the video image - through a feature called Smart Camera - to focus on the person in the frame.

Another function, called Spotlight, tells the camera to focus on a specific person when multiple people are displayed on the screen.

A good product, but is it reliable

As appealing as this experience maybe, Facebook does not have the best reputation at the moment in terms of its ability to act responsibly with customer data, so how about letting Facebook put a device with a microphone and a great camera in your home?

More than any of the product's shortcomings on the Portal, there are a few, Facebook's history of privacy issues could be the main obstacle to its success.
